It's always interesting to look back and consider how you got to wherever you are - all the decisions you made -both positive and negative, all the opportunities you jumped at or passed on, all the luck or lack of it, you experienced. It's impossible to know how things would be different had one or another item changed ever so slightly, but it sure seems like fate guided you to a good and happy place.

As for the hard decisions you made on your way to Portugal, I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes (often misattributed to Mark Twain, but no one knows who actually said it): "Twenty years from now you'll be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream, discover."

Cheers to new beginnings!

Thanks for sharing your life, Carol. Many of us -- from different places across the USA, with families young and grown -- made similar decisions. It's nearly five years for us now; almost time to apply for permanent residencia followed by Portuguese citizenship. Do we have any regrets about our journey? None about living in Portugal. Only about what's happening to the USA as we fearfully watch and listen. Our son and his family live in Texas, my siblings are in Florida. Need I say more?
