Welcome home, yes, HERE is home, Carol and Paul. My god, tears are flowing down my checks. I missed you and your journey posts but it was a niggling 'miss them' thing, until today. You captured 100% of everything that Craig and I have felt and experienced. You captured what I felt and didn't or couldn't put into words...the massiveness of the US, the overwhelming stuff, the conversation, pace, caring.....well, each and every paragraph you wrote is a feat of perfect observation and encapsulation. You are also braver than I am, as I've attempted to put my voice to all of this and found myself in the middle of a ruckus of disagreement. We haven't been back to the US for 8 of the last 12 years of living in Portugal because we lack the ability to absorb all that you mention. We also don't get to 'go home' anyway, as 'home' would be Chicago, and our family gathers in Western Michigan...a hellscape unto itself. Hugs, huge and warm hugs, to you both. Thank you. And thank you for letting me comment as a catharsis!

Hi Carol,

I live in the Sarasota, Florida, area. I bet the drive out of Miami was frightful! It is interesting to see an outside perspective. As we slowly get used to overcrowding, high prices, and always being "sold" on buying more stuff. Our little community along the breathtaking beaches is being polluted and overrun.

As I clear out my big house with a 750 square foot garage to ready for my move to Portugal, I am guilty and shocked at what I own and all the "stuff" that doesn't serve me or make me happy.

Not everyone loves the FL governor; the only problem is you cannot say it here.

I agree with you; you really can't go home again. You outgrow places, change your perspective and evolve. Isn't that what makes life interesting?
