The 10 Best Travel Books for Fall 2024 and Beyond
Inspiration, practical advice, and cultural insights. (And a personal message).
Travel books have always been a source of inspiration for me, offering a chance to explore new destinations and cultures from the comfort of home. So, whether you're planning your next adventure or simply looking for some armchair escapism, these ten travel books for Fall 2024 and beyond will transport you to far-off lands and broaden your horizons (and may also make good gifts for your favorite traveler!)
But…before we get to the list…
My Personal Message:
Although I rarely talk about politics on my blog, and am not especially politically savvy, on a personal note, and as an American citizen and an expat, this week has been a tough one for me, for Paul, and many of our fellow citizens, as well as some (but not all, unfortunately) family members and friends.
The outcome of the U.S. election was not one we personally supported, and it will take some time to process all that this will encompass. I won’t deny that I’m apprehensive and worried.
As someone who was once a sheltered person living in mostly white suburban neighborhoods in the U.S., living in another country has given me a broader perspective on life and the beauty and diversity of different cultures, traditions, and people.
I wish everyone could experience this, because I think it would make the overall world view better. I also understand that not everyone can pack up and leave when things go sideways. I am most grateful for this experience and for being on this Portugal journey with Paul and with all of you.
I firmly believe we all have more in common than not. And while I cannot change the course of the future, I can continue to learn, experience, and understand more about this beautiful world. I am committed to being still, to listen to the quiet, to see and appreciate the little things, to be more curious, to smile back at someone, to have more conversations; to be human.
My humble gift is my ability to write, and I will always do my best to share my thoughts and experiences with you in the hope that you will find comfort and inspiration in words.
Peace. - CW

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and marrow-mindedness and many of our people need it sorely. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." -- Mark Twain
Carol, I’m still processing what just happened, it was not the outcome our family hoped for at all. We have a couple of family members with health issues who need our emotional and financial support, and now seems like it will be an especially bad time to trust our government to care for their needs. But hoping to manage some “slow travel” excursions in the coming year. In the meantime, I’ll live vicariously through your Substack!
