Thanks for information. I didn’t know about the Changing of the Guards ceremony. We’d like to be in Lisbon when it happens sometime.

Great thoughtful overview Carol. It’s super timely in this fraught geopolitical world. Curious to know US military presence in the country and cooperation or not in support of current worldwide conflicts. Love reading your always insightful articles.

Thanks for your comment, Joy. The 65th Air Base Wing is the American unit stationed at Lajes Field, Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal. It is often used as a refuelling point. According to The Portugal News, there has been some recent activity at the base although I am unable to confirm if they are assisting refuelling efforts for any current worldwide conflicts: https://www.theportugalnews.com/news/2026-03-02/american-military-planes-continue-to-land-in-the-azores/984237 - CW
