I love this post. We saw these amazing creatures for the first time income portal. They were all over the little middle of town on top of steeples. And then we saw them on the electrical towers. Driving back from Chavira. Just love them and now I see from, the replies that they are down in the algarve as well.

We noticed those last month driving down to Lagos and wondered what the birds were. Now we know.

Love the storks, they are everywhere in Silves (Algarve) . Such a cool sound they make too.

Thanks Carol for the post on these magnificent birds. I have been a bird watcher for years and sorely miss my North American friends. I had always heard that Portugal has many species of birds- especially south of Lisbon, but I have yet to see hardly a one. I'll have to take another trip south to catch a glimpse of these beauties.

There are not only in Alentejo and the Algarve. Here in Aveiro, just a 10 minute drive to the Rio there are a lot of nests and we see them up here year round as well, though not so many in winter. There is a tree by the river where there are probably a dozen nests (as they are communal). You can hear them before you actually see them as they click their bills to communicate as you mentioned. When there are several nests, it can get quite noisy.
