hi Carol and Paul! i have to admit that we never tried ginja during our travels in portugal. not even in obidos where it was omnipresent! i'll take a look at the recipe and see if i might try making it. we are on again/off again with portugal/europe as i type this. santa fe makes the most sense to us right now. certainly has the iberian influence;) and take those 2/3 month trips into portugal/europe. will stay in touch re: plans.

Olá Carol, We absolutely fell in love with Ginja on our trip to Portugal last year. We finally have our Visa and arrive in March and cannot wait until we can sip another cup. But what I really need to say is it’s a small world. I’ve commented before that I too am from Arizona... but I never mentioned I’m a hairstylist, and I know Alfonso! I worked in Tucson at Gadabout and we were a Wella Salon. As a Wella educator, Alfonso always came to assist the main artists at our Wella educations. We all know and love Alfonso. I’ve even referred clients who moved to Phoenix to him. Maybe some day we will meet as well. It is a small world.

Thomas, thanks for your comment. Indeed it is a small world! Alfonso was my one and only stylist for all the years Paul and I lived in Arizona!

Congratulations on getting your Visas! Exciting times! Perhaps our paths will cross when you arrive in Portugal and we'll celebrate our good fortune with a glass of Ginja!-CW

Cool story. Did your parents or grandparents speak Portugues to you when growing up?

Greg, thanks for your comment. My grandparents and parents spoke Portuguese amongst themselves, usually when they didn't want us kids to know what they were saying.🥺

Unfortunately, the culture at the time was to speak English. We were after all, Americans. So I only learned a few words growing up. I did take a Portuguese language class in college, but since I didn't use it I lost a lot of it.

So, now that we're in the home country of my ancestry I have to learn Portuguese. And the older you are, the harder it is...-CW

We had our first taste of Ginja while touring Lisbon with my brother-in-law and his husband. I liked it. Thanks for the recipe link. I will definately do it next summer when the cherries are available. It looks like it takes a good three to four months to be ready. Thanks, Carol.

I remember my first trip to Obidos and trying Ginja. A beautiful experience. If you have not visited the walled city it is amazing. Be sure to walk the wall and look down on the roofs that are very old. In summer everything is blooming and it is quite beautiful. Of course, make the short drive to Paniche and eat seafood with a good Vino Verde - a perfect day!

Thanks for the comment, Mike. We will be visiting Obidos and the surrounding area very soon! And thanks for the tips on what to see. I'm sure some of our adventures will make it into an upcoming post! -CW
