I recently discovered Luísa Sobral, a very talented Portuguese musician and composer. I'm not on Spotify, but you may be able to find her there. She's on YouTube and her web site is:
Thanks for your comment. And thank you for telling me about Luísa Sobral. I will definitely look for her music! I am honored that you find my work on Substack enjoyable - many thanks! - CW
Wonderful article👏. You are so lucky @Carol to have grown up in a house filled with music and with gifted parents. During these unprecedented & crazy times, music has become a vital part of everyone’s lives. Michele and I enjoy Fado restaurants in Alfama.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and your music, Carol! I must have an old Portuguese soul, since I’m so drawn to your music and your lovely country! 😉❤️
Thanks for your comments. Yes, my grandparents were born in Portugal - maternal grandparents in Lisbon (my great-grandmother lived in Eiro). Paternal grandparents in the Azores - San Miguel. My own parents were born in the U.S. Part of my own Portugal journey is to find more information about my heritage. Thanks for recommending José CID. I have added some of his songs to the playlist. Obrigada!
The natural beauty of the island is amazing. I can understand why many wanted to go to America but I know of many who always come back to visit and “matar as saudades “..
We haven't been to S. Miguel yet. But we would like to plan a few weeks there so that I can try to find out more about my paternal grandfather's family and also to experience the beauty of the island. My father traveled only once to S. Miguel and that was when he was 80 years old (he's now almost 95). He wasn't able to find his father's birthplace, but when he stood in the center of the village that his father grew up in, he said he could feel his father's presence.
Thank you for posting about Portuguese music!

I was impressed to know that you are of Portuguese origin.
Being from Porto, one of my favorite songs is by Rui Veloso , who is also from Porto, “Porto Sentido “
There is another one who at age 80 is still great, José CID.
