In recent years (post 2020) and possibly due to the influx of a lot of foreigners and wealthy ones, many places catering to these people (such as the pancake cafes in Lisbon, or wherever an establishment is owned by a corporation or foreign capital) there’s the “suggested tip” already placed in the bill, when the server comes around.

I (European) hate it. It’s a soft core pressure I do not like and I try not to return to these places

We have also seen this practice as well, especially the last couple of years and do not like it. Tourists should respect the tipping culture in Europe (my opinion). -CW

The issue is that companies/restaurant holders do not. They saw a possible peer pressure margin and invariably they used it. I had only seen it in London before. Now it’s almost the rule in all those places where foreigners make up the large part of the restaurant revenues (which can be also an helpful indicator for eating out: these places aren’t “genuine”, no matter what their marketing department says)

It is so helpful, truly! Having traveled in Europe, I find it generous by some standards, but honest and very much the way I think. Last summer, for the first time, I went to Portugal and absolutely loved it. The people were so kind and it was incredibly beautiful! Currently I live in Rhode Island and there are so many people here of Portuguese descent. I am not and I knew so little about the culture or the country and I am so pleased to have visited. It is definitely a place I am contemplating a move to. Your comments are so helpful and welcomed as I contemplate this journey. Thank you so much!

We are originally from Rhode Island. I especially appreciate my Portuguese heritage and look forward to learning more about my ancestry now that we're here!

I do love Rhode Island, although I am not originally from here, but if I choose to move out of the US, Portugal is high on the list! I await your posts eagerly and find them so interesting and helpful!
